Little notice, so open this on up:
Seems people are telling me strip mining wasn't allowed in the game. I actually asked this a couple times before the game started (as I assumed it wasn't, to be truthful), but got told by several people that the way you mine does not matter.
So, if it came out to there actually not being any strip mining allowed, I take fault in being misinformed in more than one instance, but I am strongly certain it was allowed.

Welcome everyone to Ultra Hardcore, or UHC for short, season 3.
In this brutally intense game, 13 teams of 2 players are specifically placed into a 2,000x2,000 world, and are sent out to kill, or be killed. Each team must gather resources and keep caution, as vanilla health-regen is disabled. The only means of healing yourself is by feasting on a golden apple, drinking a potion of healing, or devouring the head of your foe. If you are left alone, you fight for your teammate to achieve glory.
Last team standing is declared the victor. May the best team win.
